Colorado Fighting Elk Announce Strategic Pause for 2026–27 Season; Organization Plans Return in 2027 Craig, Colo. — The ownership group of the Colorado Fighting Elk today announces that the team will pause operations for the 2026–27 season as part of a strategic initiative focused on facility improvements and long-term organizational growth. The decision is a proactive investment in the future of junior hockey in Craig CO and is centered on strengthening the foundation necessary to support a competitive and sustainable program. The Elk will continue to retain full rights to the Colorado Fighting Elk name, branding, and intellectual property, with full intentions of returning to competition for the 2027 season. The organization’s home venue, Moffat County Ice Arena, remains a valued and vital community asset. However, the arena was not originally constructed to accommodate the evolving demands of junior hockey. Over the next year, ownership and partners will focus on meaningful facility enhancements designed to elevate both player development and fan experience while benefiting the broader community. Planned upgrades include: Sheeting and finishing arena walls Completing and upgrading locker room facilities Adding a full-service snack bar Improving and reconfiguring bleacher seating Additional improvements to enhance overall game-day operations These improvements are intended to support not only junior hockey but also youth programs, public skating, tournaments, and community events. Player & Coaching Transition: All current eligible players will have the opportunity to pursue roster spots within affiliated programs under the organization’s umbrella. Head Coach Jake Tomalak will transition to a sister team — or potentially help lead a new program in Utah — within the Center Ice Group structure. This approach ensures continued development pathways for players and coaching staff during the pause. The strategic pause reflects the organization’s commitment to long-term excellence. By prioritizing infrastructure, operational growth, and facility upgrades, the Colorado Fighting Elk aim to return in 2027 stronger, more competitive, and better positioned for sustained success. Players of the Week 🏒 Goaltender Cooper White and defensemen Nikolas Szkoda earn Players of the Week honors after our four game weekend in Washington taking on the Seattle Totems and Bremerton Sockeyes. Cooper saw 79 total shots in our Friday night game against the Seattle Totems and saved 73 of them finishing the game with a .924 save percentage. "He played a stellar game, kept fighting and making saves until the last whistle," said head coach Jake Tomalak. Nikolas won the hardest worker award in our Monday matinee game against the Bremerton Sockeyes. "He gave his heart out on the ice, he cared and did what was expected of him, that's all I could ever ask for in a player," said head coach Jake Tomalak. For Immediate Release 🚨 The Colorado Fighting Elk welcome Jake Tomalak as Head Coach. Jake Tomalak brings more than 24 years of experience in the game of hockey as both a player and a coach. A former team captain at the high school and collegiate levels, Jake’s leadership background has shaped a coaching philosophy rooted in accountability, responsibility, and structure, while fostering an environment where athletes can develop both on and off the ice. Jake has coached at the youth, high school, and semi-professional levels, giving him a broad understanding of player development across multiple stages of the game. In addition to his coaching background, he has served as a scout in the NA3HL with the Sheridan Hawks, providing him with a strong eye for talent evaluation and a clear understanding of what it takes for players to advance to the next level. Passionate about building complete athletes, Jake believes success is earned through preparation, consistent effort, and a team-first mentality. His approach emphasizes discipline, growth, and long-term development, preparing players not only to compete, but to succeed beyond the rink.
